LIBRARY LOCATION SYMBOLS

The library symbols used to indicate ownership of the publications in Volume I, By the Shakers, are those assigned to libraries in Symbols of American Libraries Used in the National Union Catalog of the Library of Congress. (10th ed., Washington, D.C., 1969) and the National Union Catalog itself, including its published volumes through June 1973. A location symbol followed by an asterisk in- ’ dicates ownership of the copy described. Symbols for a few libraries not included in the National Union Catalog have been assigned in accordance with the same principles; thus MPH represents Massachusetts, Pittsfield, Hancock Shaker Village. Library ownership symbols used by Evans, Sabin, MacLean, and others have been changed to conform with the National Union catalog symbols. The list of loca- ' tions is fairly comprehensive, but it has not been feasible to indicate the holdings of all libraries that may own Shaker publications. Private collections are not identified. Ownership of the publications in Volume II, About the Shakers, has not been indicated.
