Part of the daily Shaker life was journal writing. All levels of the Shaker community maintained journals, many of which survive to this day. The bulk of the journals are either in the collections of Maine Shaker Village, the major Shaker museums, including Winterthur, and major libraries, such as Western Reserve and the NY State library.

A large number of these collections are available on Microfilm, and are at various other museums and college libraries. These journals have been the basis of much of the recent research and publications on Shaker life and history. Some have been fully transcribed and are available in Shakerpedia search.
