CALL FOR PAPERS 

Spring Forum on the Shakers

April 21 – 23, 2023 A weekend conference at the Enfield Shaker Museum, Enfield, NH

The Enfield Shaker Museum’s Annual Forum on the Shakers will be held April 21 – 23, 2023. The Museum is seeking proposals for papers and presentations for the weekend. Preference will be given to proposals based on primary sources such as, but not limited to, journals, ledger books, oral histories, newspapers, artifacts, correspondence and maps. Preference will be given to proposals presenting new research. Each lecture must be no more than 45 minutes with an additional 15 minutes for questions and answers. A projector, laptop, and screen will be available for Power Point presentations. Shaker Workshops will once again award a $500 cash prize to the presenter demonstrating the highest standard in new, outstanding scholarship. Presenters receive free lodging and a special rate on meals. Student scholarships are available.


The Forum will include lectures, tours, receptions and meals. The audience will consist of 75 – 100 people, with a general interest in Shaker studies. A welcome reception, dinner and program will be held on Friday, April 21. Programs and presentations will be held all day on Saturday, April 22. A dinner and program will be held on Saturday evening. Presntations and site-related and tours will be held on Sunday morning following breakfast.


To Submit a Proposal: Send an abstract of 500 words or fewer and a CV by January 31 to Enfield Shaker Museum, 447 NH Route 4A, Enfield, NH 03748, or email education@shakermuseum.org. Please include your name, address and a phone number in your email. Please indicate if you would like to be considered for the Shaker Workshops’ Award. Applicants will be notified of the presenting schedule by February 15. Those eligible for receipt of the Shaker Workshops’ Award will be asked to submit their papers (preferably by email) by March 20. The winner will be announced on Saturday, April 22. Applicants with Abstracts not chosen may participate in a poster session shown throughout the weekend if interested.


The Enfield Shaker Museum is situated between Mascoma Lake and Mount Assurance, with magnificent views and hiking trails. It is located five miles from I-89, about 12 miles from Dartmouth College and about 15 miles from the Vermont border. The Museum is 17 minutes from the Lebanon Municipal Airport in Lebanon, NH, 90 minutes from Manchester Boston Regional Airport and 130 minutes from Boston’s Logan International Airport. Many museums, art galleries, and restaurants are located in our Dartmouth-Lake Sunapee Region.
