Met at Second Meetinghouse, Church Family, Watervliet, at 9:45. Long lecture on herbs inside as it poured rain for two hours. A small band went on a very abbreviated herb identification tour while the other remained in the meeting house. We had a brown bag lunch in the visitors' gallery and at one o'clock had a long detailed tour of the site by guide Mary Tabner. Highlights included the broom shop, the cemetery, and external identification of the extant Church Family buildings. The day finished w i t h an auto tour of the South and West Families.

The BASSG co-sponsored this presentation with Fruitlands Museums. We paid $75.00 In addition our members provided desserts for the reception following the talk. We also had our traditional business meeting after all other festivities were finished. $502.00 in treasury as of January 31.

While we talked, we stripped herbs, and the Shaker stove warmed the Syrup Shop and our hearts. Lunch was at the North Shop.

Lunch was eaten in their small but excellent restaurant. Later in the day we drove to the Kembles' lovely old home in Glastonbury where we viewed Ruth Von Euw's slides of Manchester, England.

The second part of our journey was through the woods to find several Shaker sites and holy fountains - and we did find them.!

BASSG members met at Fruitlands to share lunch. We were given the bay window room and enjoyed the companionship of the group. After lunch, Joanne Meyers, gave us a special tour of spirit drawings and other Shaker artifacts that are not usually shown to the public. From the museum we traveled to the home of Bruce Papazian, who had arranged for us to tour the back yards and fields of many homes in the Harvard Shaker village area. It was a unique experience. To further enrich our day, Carol Acombe, the new owner of the South Family Dwelling, gave us a tour of the building to show us how much she had accomplished.

The museum gave us an excellent group rate, and the BASSG study group subsidized attendees by $5.00 each (except Steve and Amanda [who had signed up early]. ??? who spoke on textiles), Erin Budis, Curator of the exhibit, who spoke on Sewing Desks and their place in the lives of women (Shaker and other) and Jerry Grant and Tim Rieman who led us through a tour of the sewing desks and work table on exhibit.

She encouraged BASSG members to make use of their collection, and hoped see Fruitlands collaborating with our group. Also on the program was Cynthia Barton, local author and researcher, who talked about her research into the Harvard Shaker Trial of 1826, which resulted in her writing a paper on the subject.

Up hill and down dale we marched to explore the ruins of the early Shaker site. We ate lunch by a stream where a fire was lit was warmth. We were starved from all that open air. It was an extraordinary adventure.

This tour was under the auspices of Fruitlands.
104Saturday, October 30th, 1999Open House Tour of the Millers' Shaker Collection - Sunny and Mild Fall Day. The Millers gracious opened their house and their collection of Shaker to the BASSG. Thegroup met in two stages for lunch and a tour. The mild day made it possible to have l u n c h in their Atrium, and while one group made the tour of Steve's marvelous collection, the other sat and chatted. It was a lovely day.
105Saturday, November 13th, 1999New York State Museum Shaker Exhibit, Albany - Overcast and Cold We carpooled to the New York State Museum to view their exhibit, "A Shaker Legacy: the Shaker Collection at the New York State Museum." The Museum has perhaps the largest collection of Shaker objects owned by any museum, and John Scherer, Associate Curator and a member of the NYSM History Department, acted as our guide to those objects on display.

Entitled "The Great Disappointment: The Followers of William Miller", her talk drew a rapt audience and an interesting post-talk discussion.

Speakers included Dan Patterson, Sharon Koomer, Ruth Wolfe, Jane Crosthwaite and Rachel Coffey. An interesting day.

We do not often "study", and so it was surprising how involved our members became in the stimulating conversation. A suggestion was to do another book next year.
